P1
All 27 of our wonderful Primary 1 pupils have now settled in to school life at BIPS and stay for a full day, including lunch until 2pm.
Below is an outline of what learning is taking place in the following curricular areas this half term.
Literacy:
Our topic is 'A Time to Rhyme.' The pupils will be learning various nursery rhymes; reciting and singing these as well as exploring rhythm and beat. Through this topic pupils will develop their phonological awareness and knowledge of syllabication. There will be lots of opportunities to explore visual and auditory awareness through rhyme.
As it is at an early stage of the children's literacy skills, they will have lots of opportunities to develop their hand strength and fine motor skills to get ready for more formal writing as the year progresses. If you visit the P1 classroom you will see lots of pre-writing work, lots of mark making and plenty of scissor work going on daily.
Numeracy:
The pupils will be learning how to sort. They will learn how to select various criteria and be able to name the sets and give reasons for their selection. Pupils will sort for size, colour and type.
Moving on then, the pupils will explore repeated patterns. As always, this will be done using various practical equipment before progressing to paper. We also bring this learning outside by exploring patterns in the world around us and we like spotting these in the playground, around the school grounds and whilst we are out and about on our 'daily mile' walks. This really brings the learning to life!
As if that wasn't action packed enough, we then learn lots about basic 2D shapes. We learn about the circle, square, rectangle and triangle. We learn simple properties i.e. count the sides and corners, we play many shape games and carry out many shape tasks in groups and of course we take our learning outside and do outdoor shape hunts.
World Around Us
The theme for our World Around Us theme is the same as our Literacy: A Time to Rhyme and we generally teach this through our daily structured play sessions each afternoon.
We include all these areas in our play: role play, paint, dough, construction, small world, craft, ICT, junk/natural materials, tuff trays, sand and water. It is a hive of activity where the children can choose where they want to build, create, play, imagine, construct, mould, sculpt and have fun, sharing and turn taking with friends.
NEXT UP..... IS THE TOPIC CALLED:
'ALL ABOUT ME.'
